Competitive sports can be both harsh and beautiful.
And that often happens in just one moment.
In team kendo, the thought, "My mistake let the team down," hurts more than losing alone.
I've seen it so many times.
Someone turns away, and in a quiet moment, quickly wipes a tear away.
But then they lift their head. Their eyes are still red, but their look is calm.
Like a blade that's been shaped by fire, it finds its shine again.
That's not giving up.
It's taking that "if only" and tucking it deep inside.
So that next time you swing, there's a little more strength in it.
I don't admire people who never fall.
I admire those who, with tears still fresh, pick up their shinai in their heart again.
Losing is not the end.
It's how you get ready to begin again.
To everyone who has ever fought back tears on the court:
May you grow stronger, quietly, from the inside out.
